ABOUT
Chiu Yung Chan is a multidisciplinary musician. She is a professional double bassist, piano accompanist, and Guqin player. Born and bred in Hong Kong, she is the Gold awardee of the Hong Kong Award for Young People. Currently, she is based in London, UK.
As a professional double bassist, she graduated in Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2022, she obtained her Master of Music (MMus) and Master of music performances (Mperf). In the past two years, she has been awarded the junior fellowship at Guildhall and being selected for the Chipping Campden Festival Academy Orchestra and Korean Symphony Orchestra International Academy. She was the principal double bassist of London City Orchestra and Trinity Orchestra in London where she performed her Pulcinella and Mahler Symphony no.1 Solo. She is an active performer and a keen ensemble player which she has also worked with Pegasus Opera Company, Bampton Classical Opera and London Musical Theatre Orchestra etc.
As a piano accompanist, she is currently the church pianist of Kentish Town Congregational church. She obtained her LTCL in piano recital from Trinity College with distinction in 2014. Also, she has been played in Edward Auer, Nigel Clayton's master class and practice sessions with international double bass soloist Catalin Rotaru in 2015 Japan International double bass festival.
Besides music, she is also passionate about Chinese culture as this is part of her cultural root. She obtained Master of Chinese Language and Literature in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, also studied guqin with Dr Tse Chun Yan while doing her Bachelor degree in Music in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. As part of her research of Chinese language and music, she did an ethnomusicology focus and wrote her thesis about a Chinese opera singer in Hong Kong which has been awarded the Yam Bai Chinese opera scholarship in 2017. Her love to Chinese culture also drives her to share her thoughts in Europe. She collaborated with her friends on guqin and formed a new ensemble of double bass, harp and string. Their new piece, "Oro" composed by Valentina Ciardelli was a new commission from the Museum of Oriental Art in Turin (MAO). Their recording is now being played in the museum.
